It's time to 'Escape to Paradise'... 5 minutes with founder Sacha Alagich

Escape 11 HR.jpg

Escape to Paradise was founded 12 years ago in Sydney's Iconic Manly Beach and the brand has captured the imagination of the world with its vibrant island lifestyle offering and it’s goal to bring holiday bliss to everyday life.

Escape to Paradise designs a wide range of premium luxury homewares and accessories, from bags to cushions to beach towels.  Founder Sacha Alagich is a global gypsetter and surfing enthusiast who travels regularly to exotic destinations around the world to help build the narrative behind her brand.

Sacha has always felt that there needs to be more to a label than for it just to be pretty, the brand needs to be a vehicle for change. 'I want to use the brand to be able to make a difference and support causes that I am so passionate about, such as environmental projects to plant trees in rainforest regeneration areas or marine conservation programs, so it isn't just about the products but about the difference we can make in the world' she says.

How/when did Escape to Paradise begin?

My initial dream for Escape to Paradise began when I was only 7 years old on a holiday to Fiji where I made tropical flower decorations to sell to guests at the resort I was staying at, from that moment onwards I always knew that one day I wanted to have my own business, especially something inspired by beautiful tropical destinations…then 10 years ago that dream finally came true when I launched our first collection of handbags and travel accessories. We had humble beginnings at the Bondi and Kirribilli Markets as most brands begin this way, shortly after we discovered the world of trade shows and from there the brand grew over time to now be a truly global brand where our designs can be found throughout the US, Canada, Europe, South East Asia, New Zealand and of course Australia.

How would you describe your current collection?
Our current collection is inspired by the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki Beach. I just love the vibrant colours and tropical feeling when visiting this iconic hotel, I wanted to translate this into a collection where everyone can have the feeling of paradise in their own home.

Escape 44 LR.jpg
Escape 13 LR.jpg

What inspires you when designing a new range?
I think of the most beautiful destinations around the world and ways to translate this into products through the colours and patterns associated with the feelings from these destinations.

Your top 3 tips for creating a luxurious tropical space?
1. You can’t go wrong with palm trees. Having either real palms or décor items with palm tree motifs will always set the tone for a tropical space.

2. Use furniture in natural materials such as cane or wood to create an earthy feel.

3. Let the sun shine in. Having lots of natural light in a space will always make a space feel more coastal. Use lots of white for the walls, upholstery and light shear curtains so the light will bounce off these surfaces and give the room a fresh tropical feeling.

Where can we buy your beautiful products?
We have over 300 stockists Australia wide in all of the major coastal locations so our products can be found at most beachside suburbs, such as Swish in Warriewood, NSW, Coasting Home, Forster, NSW, Whitebeach in Perigean Beach, QLD, Biku Furniture in Bundall, QLD. We also have an online store

Escape 36 LR.jpg
Escape 48 HR.jpg

What can we expect next from Escape to Paradise?
Our next collection will be inspired by the islands of Tahiti, so keep a look out for beautiful aquas, teals and coral motifs to reflect the beauty of these islands.

We love that you give back by donating to not for profit charities, why is this so important to you and your business?
I always believe in helping to make the world a more beautiful place and by giving back to charities who help conserve the environment this is a way to help have a positive impact on the world. For every item sold on our website this helps plant trees in rainforests around the world where they have been depleted.

What is your favourite tropical holiday destination?
I have so many favourite tropical destinations around the world it is hard to list them all, but my top places to visit are Tahiti, Hawaii, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Bold & Bright - OON release their AW18 collection ‘Falgun’

Styling - Greenhouse Interiors | Photography - Armelle Habib

Styling - Greenhouse Interiors | Photography - Armelle Habib

This season Oon goes bolder and brighter with their latest collection entitled 'Falgun'. Falgun is the Nepalese calendar month synonymous with the big colour festival 'holi' which is held at the beginning of each spring. The collection is inspired by the ideals of the festival - both the experience  and the observance. The colours of 'holi' are bright, contrasting, fun and joyous and that is exactly what the 'Falgun' collection embodies.

We love Oon's use of geometric patterns and tailored stitching, which are paired back with the use of natural textures, simple structures and organic shapes. Throughout the range their is a juxtaposition of carefully considered textures all perfectly complementing each other.

The AW18 Collection is all about celebrating colour by encouraging the use of bold colours, mixing and matching patterns and shapes and making a statement with interiors.

Oon continue to stay true to their core values by using traditional techniques, such as 'kantha' stitching from India, while always adding a touch of their signature contemporary style and edge.

Featuring shags, tailored stitching and organic shapes alongside muted shades of hazelnut, soft pink, navy with dashes of red and gold, we just know that you are going to love this range just as much as we do!

A designer furniture collection from interior stylist Sarah Ellison...

New Wave

For a long time I have been a fan of uber stylist Sarah Ellison, mostly for her work in Real Living Mag, where she worked as a senior stylist and the style director for over 7 years and also for her down right spot on eye for styling amazing spaces. During her time as stylist she has been on the forefront of interior trends, curating them as well as making them.

Therefore we feel that her latest venture is the perfect fit, a furniture collection all of her own – entitled New Wave. It features furniture and accessories that are inspired by her local Bondi Beach, from key furniture pieces for your lounge room and kitchen, to 70's inspired mirrors and ceramic sculptural pieces. The range is truly impressive, has a distinctly relaxed modern feel and aesthetically is right up my alley!

The collection consists of an array of materials, such as linen, my personal fav terrazzo, marble, brass, leather and travertine. All of these elements work harmoniously together to bring this collection to life, and wow is it divine!

The New Wave collection by Sarah Ellison is available from Sarah’s website, and exclusively through Clickon Furniture nationwide.

The New, Modern and Innovative Nespresso Vertuo Machine...

Nespresso Vertuo… new, modern, innovative and did I say COFFEE!

But first – COFFEE! That’s my mantra in life and how could this be you ask, when I’ve never had a Nespresso Machine… that is, until now!

I was extremely lucky to be able to trial the new Nespresso Vertuo Machine and now I am left wondering, how have I lived until now without this?

It has changed my life, well mostly my mornings, and a cheeky evening Espresso Martini obviously!

Nespresso Vertuo

Australia is a nation of coffee lovers, from our morning lattes, to our afternoon short black pick me ups, to an iced coffee in the late afternoon sun or an espresso martini to kick off the evening – we just love coffee, and good coffee at that!

The Vertuo is Nespresso’s most intelligent and elegant looking machine to date. This versatile machine delivers the highest quality coffee in 4 cup sizes, from the perfect espresso to a mug size if that’s your style! It has simple and easy to use one button operation, quick preheat and brewing times, has a very reasonable price tag of $299 and comes in three modern and on trend colours, which is great when you like your appliances to fit in with your kitchen’s aesthetics like I do!

Nespresso Vertuo

One of my favourite features is the ‘Reverso’, a long black, with a dash of milk – which is my exact order at my local café every morning, so I’m loving that I can now make my favourite coffee at home. The Vertuo creates the ‘Reverso’ by adding a dash of milk to the mug before extracting the coffee over the top. This process delivers a smooth, indulgent and creamy texture without the need for an additional milk frothing device.

Another new and truly exciting feature is Vertuo’s extraction process called ‘Centrifusion’. The intelligent extraction system provides an extremely high level of precision as the machine recognises, through barcode technology, each expertly designed Nespresso coffee capsule and adjusts the extraction parameters to brew each blend in the most optimal way – it reads cup size, temperature, rotational speed, flow rate and the time that water is in contact with the ground coffee.

Nespresso Vertuo

An extra fact about Nespresso that I love is that they are committed to ensuring sustainability throughout their operations – and their recycling program shows just how committed they are. With over 19,000 collection points, including Nespresso boutiques and over 300 florists, you can feel content knowing that your used capsules are recycled.

Additionally, Nespresso has partnered with Australia Post to provide co-branded satchels to ensure that even if you live remotely, you can recycle your capsules. It’s this type of thinking and ingenuity that makes me love my Nespresso Vertuo even more.

Disclosure - I was given the Nespresso machine to trial, I wasn't paid to write a review.

Blankets with personality... by Slowdown Studio

If you know me well, you would know that personally I'm not the biggest fan of pattern in my own home, but the amazing work of Slowdown Studio has changed my mind and has made me really excited!

Slowdown Studio is the creative project of Australian-born, Los Angeles-based designer Marc Hendrick. With a love of playful prints and patterns, Marc selects his favourite illustrators and artists from around the world to collaborate on a series of woven blankets. With limited runs of each style, Slowdown Studio celebrates individuality and artistry, bringing these unique pieces into homes in the form of something as beautiful and versatile as a 100% cotton throw.

Slowdown Studio says "Whether laying around a grassy knoll, sunning on a beach or getting comfy on the couch, Slowdown Studio blankets are the perfect item to help you find a welcome change of pace and comfort. So grab a coffee, a book and a blanket, and slow it down."

From sprawling homes to studio apartments, we believe in the potential to make your space anew and do it from the ground up.” says Arro Home

"With its tassel texture and jewel tones, the Miette Rug (centre) is one sassy showstopper! Whether you pop it in your living room or your bedroom (or your office, or your dining room), this woven kilim rug is sure to make your space feel special." says Arro Home

Interior Trend Predictions for 2018... by Lucy Given from LUC. Design Store

Lucy Given is one busy lady. Not only is she paving the way for homeware interiors at her amazing LUC. design store in Hobart, she was also recently named the first ever ‘Retailer of the Year’ at the 2017 Gift and Life Instyle Awards.

Having over 25 years experience in both commercial and residential interior design and retail - Lucy knows a thing or two about what’s happening in the industry, on a national and international scale. This makes Lucy the perfect person to lead several education sessions at Reed Gift Fairs in Melbourne this August. Each session is tailored specifically to those within this ever-growing industry.

In preparation for the Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne event, Lucy has shared some of her professional interior trend predictions for spring/summer 18 with us... scroll down!

Scandinavian influences – this is an interior trend that has continued to flourish and evolve over the years. Interior trends for 2018 will combine Scandinavian designs with a much more paired back sensibility. This will include the use of vintage/timeless elements (think classic furniture and lighting from the 60’s and 70’s) teamed with a touch of glamour in metal, leather or glass  – creating a sense of comfort and luxury in the home. There will be less of the pale timbers and soft greys this season, and more walnut, natural leather and textural hides.

The return of colour – trending across the industry is the return of bold colour choices and the resurgence of layers and textures. There is a shift in the shades of colours we are used to seeing and a move toward earthy tones, metallics and shiny surfaces that reflect a sense of luxury and wealth. You can also expect to see lots of pink trending this season and more specifically millennial pink. Green will continue to remain a strong trend, however it will take on softer shades of sage, soft pastel celery and avocado. Dark interiors dominate with moody greys and intense blues - which makes me very happy.

The mix of colours with textures – this season we will continue to see the pairing of colours and textures, which includes velvet and natural textiles that will be emulated throughout linens and wools. Along with this, there will be an inclusion of leather, metal accents, concrete and glass mixed with other natural elements such as plants, timbers, stone and textural fabrics.

Marble and natural stone – Expect to see the pairing of marble and natural stone this season, with black being the new white when it comes to marbling. Keep an eye out for stone finishes and tones of grey and black, along with thin profiles in bench and table tops. Black kitchens will also become huge.

All of these trends and more will be showcased at Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne in August 2017.

Introducing Ames.... new to Meizai

Ames Creative Director Ana María Calderón Kayser not only lives between different cultures herself, but since establishing her label, has also been collaborating with designers from different countries to develop furniture and interior accessories that would appeal to the hearts and minds of cosmopolitans.

True to this tradition, the Sala collection designed by Sebastian Herkner is shaped by various cultural influences. For his Ames Sala collection, he ventured into two new territories: Colombia was a new destination for him and, for the first time, he developed an entire home collection.

The result is a range of modern home accessories, including throws, rugs, cushions, vases, baskets and bowls whose forms and colours reflect the diversity and characteristics of Colombia.

Meizai is proud to be the exclusive distributor of Ames products in Australia in partnership with Halcyon Lake who is distributing the range of rugs from the Sala Collection.

The ames sala collection is inspired by Colombia and its people and by traditional Colombian crafts. The country’s diversity and characteristics are mirrored in the products’ shapes and colours. I was particularly inspired by the archetypical forms I encountered in Bogotá’s Gold Museum, the Museo del Oro. The home collection features my signature style but it is rooted in Colombia, where all the products in the collection are handcrafted according to time-honoured traditions.” - Sebastian Herkner
