The Bedroom Upgrade I Should've Made Sooner

There are some renovation decisions you agonise over for months, and then there are the ones that are so obvious in hindsight you genuinely can't believe it took this long. This one's the second kind.

With three kids in the house, storage is never really "sorted." It just shifts from room to room, cupboard to cupboard, until eventually it lands unceremoniously at the end of your own bed. Spare linen. Out-of-season throws. And, if I'm honest, an embarrassing amount of cushions. A girl loves choices. I just never have anywhere to put them.

So when it came to finishing off our bedroom at our current Reno project The Shores, storage wasn't a nice-to-have. It was the whole brief.

Enter the Rochelle Storage Bed

I've been a longtime fan of Castlery's furniture, but the Rochelle Storage Bed might be my favourite piece yet, mostly because it doesn't look like a storage solution. Sculptural curves, rounded corners and a gas-lift base that reveals a genuinely huge amount of hidden space underneath.

Every one of those cushions I mentioned? Gone. Tucked away, out of sight, without a single ugly under-bed tub in sight. It's the rare piece that solves a very unglamorous problem while still looking like the best thing in the room.

The Mattress That Was Actually the Point

As much as I love a good storage solution, the real hero of this upgrade is what's sitting on top of it: the Ayrie Comfort mattress, in the 30.5cm profile.

A few things sold me on this one:

  • Cool to the touch. The TENCEL™ Lyocell cover is naturally breathable, which matters more than I expected living somewhere as warm as Noosa.

  • Genuinely cloud-like. The gel memory foam and pocket spring combination gives it that sink-in feeling without losing support, it contours without ever feeling like it's swallowing you.

  • Built for a full house. With three kids occasionally using our bed as a trampoline, the individually wrapped springs and motion isolation mean I'm not woken up every time someone climbs in for an early morning cuddle.

  • No compromise on materials. OEKO-TEX® certified cover, CertiPUR-US® foams, no fibreglass, which, when you've got little ones in the house, is non-negotiable.

It also comes with a 100-Night Sleep Easy Guarantee and a 10-Year Warranty, so there's very little risk in actually giving it a go.

Finishing the Look

To round out the space, we added two Crescent 1-Drawer Bedside Tables, gorgeous, curved, well-proportioned and storage - always!

The Result

What was once a room I loved the look of but dreaded the clutter of is now, finally, both. The storage means the chaos has somewhere to live. The mattress means that at the end of a very full day, this room is actually mine again.

If you've been eyeing off a similar upgrade, Castlery has kindly given Dot + Pop readers $100 off orders over $1,500 with the code CCDOTANDPOP (valid until 31 December 2026, and stackable with other site promotions).

Sometimes the simplest layer or in this case, the right base and the right mattress, makes the biggest difference.
