Travel Tuesday | Hollywood - The Beverly Hills Hotel

If the walls of The Beverly Hills Hotel could talk… what is now affectionately known as the ‘Pink Palace’ the hotel is a Los Angeles institution. A hotel that attracts the big stars, show business legends and those of us who like the idea of being treated like a celebrity for a weekend.

Think old, classic Hollywood through and through – and of course the Instagram worthy interior design! Bubblegum pink plaster walls, huge Mexican palms, green candy-striped pool beds, banana leaf wallpaper and the dusty pink exterior are the signature hotel themes.

A colour palette of cream and taupe adorn the hotel’s 208 guestrooms and suites, with furnishings in luxurious materials such as leather and mohair. There are also 23 bungalows dotted around the hotel’s tropical garden, with their own separate entrance from the side street for those wanting some extra privacy.

Travel Tuesday | City living - Pulitzer Amsterdam

All images from Pulitzer Amsterdam

All images from Pulitzer Amsterdam

Pulitzer Amsterdam is a boutique hotel set within 25 restored and linked canal houses dating back to the 17th century. In 1960 Peter Pulitzer (grandson of Pulitzer Prize founder Joseph Pulitzer) saw great potential in the beautiful but dilapidated canal houses of Amsterdam, he purchased twelve houses along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals and created Amsterdam’s first five-star hotel and over the course of the next thirty years the hotel grew from twelve restored canal houses to twenty-five.

The Pulitzer continues to collect elements that add to its unique and vibrant character: the intricate maze of historic houses, the exclusive restaurant, the gardens and the annual floating concerts on the Prinsengracht. The Pulitzer gardens occupy a surprising green oasis nestled at the centre of the hotel; away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is a tranquil hideaway to relax, work or socialise.

In 2015 and 2016 the hotel went through the largest renovation in its history. The latest reinvention of the Pulitzer combines historical elements and classic beauty with contemporary style, resulting in a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern comfort.

Take in the architecture from the canals on the hotel’s vintage boat or prepare for art at Amsterdam’s renowned museums in Pulitzer’s Collectors Suites, which are each decorated with impressive collections of art, antiques, books and music. Throughout the day, the Jansz restaurant on the canal offers classic bistro dishes and some of the city’s best people-watching.

Peter Pulitzer adhered to a simple motto: “The house of your neighbour is for sale only once”. And he took every chance he could to expand his Amsterdam empire.

Travel Tuesday | Beachfront - Be Tulum, Mexico

Mexico baby… it’s on the top of my travel list, a place I haven’t been but am literally dying to explore. And when I finally get to their magical beaches, I will be staying here – Be Tulum, the most stunning beach front accommodation.

Tulum is a small town located at the southern end of the Mayan Riviera, near Cancun, bordering the national park of Sian Ka’an, a coastal reserve that is a world heritage site, and far away from the bright lights and hustle of the larger all-inclusive resorts of Tulum.. something which I love!

Be Tulum offers suites that are spread thoughtfully throughout the tropical forest and white sands of the property. Some are beach front, some have plunge pools, some have ocean views from their private rooftop terraces, but all have the sounds of rolling waves when you wake in the morning…

The facilities include an infinity pool, poolside lounge, beach club, wellness spa as well as mouth-watering restaurants and bars… The best Guacamole you’ve ever had while in the pool anyone?! (and I can say this as my friends have recently stayed here and I’ve seen the pics!)

The Interiors feature natural materials which complement the environment, soft furnishings and designer furniture to ensure your space is one of sophistication and attention to detail.

Travel Tuesday | NYC Baby, PUBLIC Hotel

Public, New York - "accessible luxury"

New York City, a brand new luxury 5 star hotel and affordable rooms? Bring it on I say!

PUBLIC is a 28 story tower located on the bowery in NYC’s lower east side. The first in a new series of hotels by Ian Schrager and designed by Herzog & De Meuron, the aim was to create a 5 star luxury hotel but at an accessible and  affordable price… and yay for us, they’ve done it – rooms start at just $150 USD per night.

‘I truly believe that everyone deserves a one-of-a-kind experience that lifts their spirits and makes their heart beat faster, one that elicits an emotional response,’ says schrager. ‘to deliver this at a reasonable price point is even more on the mark for today’s savvy and sophisticated traveller.’

The hotel features include floor to ceiling windows showcasing the incredible view, touch controlled blackout blinds, 50” smart tvs and the fastest internet New York has to offer as well as absolutely stunning interiors, which is why PUBLIC made it onto DOT + POP, obviously! If you are lucky enough to book yourself a loft room, you can expect open plan layouts with separate zones for sleeping, relaxing, entertaining and working as well as an interior that is thoughtfully selected, luxuriously furnished and super inviting.

A large outdoor rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the city and a place for bbq’s, sunset drinks and gatherings with friends. A rooftop garden is the perfect spot for an afternoon relaxation session, an indoor bar which has a DJ after dark and epic city skyline views means dancing on site is a must and the hotel’s restaurant, run by chef jean-georges vongerichten has a smoker, wood grill and exquisite menu which cannot be missed!

Travel Tuesday | Tokyo Escape - Hoshinoya Hotel

Images courtsey of Hoshinoya Tokyo

Images courtsey of Hoshinoya Tokyo

Tokyo – one of my favourite cities on earth, a place for food, culture, people and history. And in the middle of the bright lights, swarms of people, shiny shopping malls and delicious restaurants is the most beautiful hotel – well more of an escape, Hoshinoyo Tokyo is divine.

Traditional in its approach but with modern features and a lot of luxury – it is a 5 star knock out in the centre of Tokyo. With 17 floors and 84 rooms (there is only approx. 6 rooms per floor), and with traditional elements such as its requirements to walk around the hotel and your room barefoot, we love that!

The top floor of Hoshinoya Tokyo consists of two bath halls, separated by gender. The baths are fed by hot spring waters drawn from 1,500 meters below the ground. Due to its high saline content, the bath water is pleasant to the skin, gently relaxing the body while improving its ability to preserve heat. Each bath hall contains an indoor and outdoor bath, connected by a cave-like tunnel. The outdoor bath is located at the bottom of an open-roof chamber with soaring walls that frame the sky above. Through the open roof, guests are presented with a private viewing of a dynamic tapestry painted with the ever-changing colours of the sky and decorated with clouds of many shapes. At night, pleasantly cool breezes blow in, bringing seasonal aromas with them.

There’s one feature that we love so much we had to share - every floor has a communal living room where attendants serve complimentary roasted green tea, sake, onigiri and miso-soup and for the night owls there is instant Ramen to curb your cravings, yay for that!

Showcasing all types of accomodation, from hotels to villas, to Air BnB, camping sites and everything in between; we hope it inspires you, encourages you or even just get’s you daydreaming. We will cover all shapes, sizes and budgets, from “beautiful but budget” to all out “blow your mind extravagance”, please join us on this fascinating journey.

MACq 01 - HOBART

So to start us off, I welcome you to MACq 01, a hotel dedicated to sharing stories which rests on the Hunter St Pier Precinct in waterfront Hobart and coincidently my home state of Tasmania.

By design, the hotel invites a journey, designed in collaboration between The Vos Group developers, Circa Architects and Pike Withers interior designers. The rooms are designed with a neutral palette to showcase the original artworks by Tasmania artist Troy Ruffels which are on show in all rooms. These artworks set the overall tone of the rooms which are supported by other stunning design features, such as plush sofas, luxurious beddings and touches of Tasmania. Where possible, local designers and craftspeople were engaged for the internal fit-out, which is robust in character but serene in it's aesthetic.

The on site facilities will have you never wanting to leave. The Lounge which features an open fire, oysters and a stunning interior, valet parking, gym, butler services as well as wifi, in-room massages, dry cleaning, shoe shining, security safe, on-demand movies, games, minibar, tea and coffee and so much more!

But please make sure you get out and enjoy the neighbourhood. MACq 01 is nestled amongst Hobart’s premier precinct for art, design, food, fashion and more, you are a stones throw away from all that Hobart has to offer.
