2019 Kitchen Trends with Fisher & Paykel...

2019 has arrived which means it’s the perfect time to talk kitchen trends. Fisher & Paykel know A LOT about kitchens and which kitchen design trends we will all be embracing throughout this new year.

The traditional kitchen hasn’t just evolved in recent years, it has also moved into the living area and in many cases merged with it… check out what you will be seeing pop up in your Instagram feed in 2019 below!

Kitchens as an extension of the living area

In the past, kitchens were usually located at the back of the house and designed as a separate space to be used by one person. Over time, however, the space has gradually moved forward into the spotlight, to become the heart of the home. As well as this literal shift, kitchens have also shifted in function — no longer just a place where food is prepared but also where it is shared. It has become a meeting place for the family: a place to work, entertain and socialise. And sometimes, we still prepare food in our kitchens — but even that is changing.

Fisher & Paykel has identified a strong trend in kitchen location, layout and design through our collaborative work with architects and designers, who are now increasingly considering the kitchen as a piece of furniture that inhabits the living space.

This means kitchens are being designed with a strong emphasis on integration, detailing and customisation, which is particularly relevant as kitchens increasingly become the central focus of modern living, providing functional and adaptable spaces. From compact apartments to spacious family homes, we’re gradually seeing the line between the kitchen, dining and lounge areas blur.

Seamless appliance integration

The practice of integrating appliances has been a major movement in the kitchen design world for several years and has become increasingly popular in Australia and New Zealand kitchens.

Selected Fisher & Paykel refrigerators, CoolDrawer™ Multi-temperature Drawers, DishDrawer™ Dishwashers, and range-hoods can be installed with custom panels matched to your cabinetry, which gives the kitchen a seamless appearance. This allows for some serious design freedom where we choose what to hide, and what to show or use as a feature product.

In smaller spaces or those with an open living plan, this integration can provide the opportunity to have more or larger appliances without them overwhelming the kitchen or living area; instead the joinery can be designed to help the kitchen feel like part of a cohesive, larger space.

Distributed kitchen designs

In traditional kitchens, a single cook worked between the three stations of the stove, sink and refrigerator, which were arranged closely to give quick, easy access to each with minimal movement. However, Fisher & Paykel have observed how the ways we are using our kitchens have changed over time. These days, more than one cook might be working simultaneously, or the kitchen will double as a space for entertaining guests. People might want to heat up leftovers for dinner one day, or cook a gastronomic feast the next, so kitchens need to be flexible and do many things well.

In contrast to the purely functional, out-of-sight cooking areas of old, today’s kitchen is also on show to guests and family alike, so design aesthetics matter more. Thinking ‘outside the triangle’ has given our designers opportunities to innovate. After all, not one size fits all.

Fisher & Paykel has designed a family of appliances that can be distributed throughout the kitchen to support contemporary patterns of use. Good kitchen design allocates areas in which specific tasks are grouped. Areas for preparation, washing, storage and baking fall into cooking zones, where as an entertaining or breakfast area might have its own zone.

For example, you can install a CoolDrawer™ Multi-temperature Drawer for drinks near the dining table, and perhaps a DishDrawer™ Dishwasher for crockery by the sink, with another for glasses by the bar. This is a design concept called ‘distributed appliances’, allowing you to configure the kitchen to suit the way you work and live.

Intuitive technology

Intuitive technology in kitchen appliances promises to make your life easier. An example of this is Fisher & Paykel’s Integrated Columns Refrigeration series featuring Variable Temperature Zone technology that gives the customer a new level of storage flexibility.

The new series features a range of modular fridge (610mm and 762mm) and freezer elements (457mm, 610mm, 762mm) that can be installed side by side or independently to each other throughout the kitchen. Customers can choose to personalise their temperature settings in the fridge Column between Fridge, Chill, and Pantry food modes or Freezer, Soft-Freeze and Deep-Freeze options in the freezer Column. Each mode is optimised to provide optimal food-care, suiting the way you shop, cook, and entertain.

Stunning contemporary living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches...

CC_21edwin_L_12.jpg

A 1940s beach house on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been transformed into a three bedroom, two-bathroom, contemporary family home. The Avalon property belongs to the creator of bellaMUMMA, Nikki Yazxhi and her husband Adam, Creative Director at MAXCO.

After nearly 15 years in the family home, Nikki and Adam decided they would either need to sell in favour of something larger or renovate the existing house. “With our two boys aged 11 and 14, we were at a crossroads of whether to sell and buy something bigger, or stay in a house and area we love and renovate to make the house suit our family’s lifestyle." says Nikki.

CC_21edwin_L_29.jpg
Stegbar - BellaMUMMA 3.jpg

Friend and interior designer, Nina Maya was engaged to direct and style the home renovation. Following two previous renovations, this final makeover involved the family moving out for three months so that the house could be gutted and rebuilt. To achieve the simple and elegant interior, a refined palette of neutrals was chosen, using only natural materials such as European oak flooring, marble, stone and brass.

Nina designed a space that maintains the home’s original charm, while maximising the indoor areas with added storage. The original wall separating the living area and the kitchen was removed, and to increase the connection to the outside, full-height glass bi-fold doors were installed on the back deck and skylights were used to boost the amount of natural light, provided by Stegbar. The kitchen is one of the first rooms the family had outgrown. With Adam’s love of cooking and the couple’s passion for entertaining, the kitchen was maximised and upgraded with new appliances for a modern and contemporary space that performed as amazingly as it looked. The kitchen and the benchtop bar are now the hub of the house.

CC_21edwin_L_01.jpg
Gyprock - BellaMUMMA 1.jpg

The new kitchen appliances were selected for their aesthetic and functionality. “We loved the look of ASKO products first off, then we started doing some research and watching Adam Liaw's YouTube videos and realised how amazing the appliances were,” says Nikki. “The ASKO Elements range is sleek and sexy, and we are beyond impressed by how they make life so much easier in the kitchen. I think the first couple of months we were continually impressed with all the new features that we were discovering.”

CC_21edwin_L_52.jpg

For the family, storage was the biggest issue. They needed to maximise the existing space and create extra storage in order to make the home more suitable for their growing family. Ultimately deciding to stay and renovate, Nikki and Adam put their savings towards creating their dream home featuring the highest quality building products. “When it came to choosing plasterboard to re-do our walls, we couldn’t go past CSR Gyprock’s Sensitive plasterboard,” says Nikki.

A designer furniture collection from interior stylist Sarah Ellison...

New Wave

For a long time I have been a fan of uber stylist Sarah Ellison, mostly for her work in Real Living Mag, where she worked as a senior stylist and the style director for over 7 years and also for her down right spot on eye for styling amazing spaces. During her time as stylist she has been on the forefront of interior trends, curating them as well as making them.

Therefore we feel that her latest venture is the perfect fit, a furniture collection all of her own – entitled New Wave. It features furniture and accessories that are inspired by her local Bondi Beach, from key furniture pieces for your lounge room and kitchen, to 70's inspired mirrors and ceramic sculptural pieces. The range is truly impressive, has a distinctly relaxed modern feel and aesthetically is right up my alley!

The collection consists of an array of materials, such as linen, my personal fav terrazzo, marble, brass, leather and travertine. All of these elements work harmoniously together to bring this collection to life, and wow is it divine!

The New Wave collection by Sarah Ellison is available from Sarah’s website, and exclusively through Clickon Furniture nationwide.

The New, Modern and Innovative Nespresso Vertuo Machine...

Nespresso Vertuo… new, modern, innovative and did I say COFFEE!

But first – COFFEE! That’s my mantra in life and how could this be you ask, when I’ve never had a Nespresso Machine… that is, until now!

I was extremely lucky to be able to trial the new Nespresso Vertuo Machine and now I am left wondering, how have I lived until now without this?

It has changed my life, well mostly my mornings, and a cheeky evening Espresso Martini obviously!

Nespresso Vertuo

Australia is a nation of coffee lovers, from our morning lattes, to our afternoon short black pick me ups, to an iced coffee in the late afternoon sun or an espresso martini to kick off the evening – we just love coffee, and good coffee at that!

The Vertuo is Nespresso’s most intelligent and elegant looking machine to date. This versatile machine delivers the highest quality coffee in 4 cup sizes, from the perfect espresso to a mug size if that’s your style! It has simple and easy to use one button operation, quick preheat and brewing times, has a very reasonable price tag of $299 and comes in three modern and on trend colours, which is great when you like your appliances to fit in with your kitchen’s aesthetics like I do!

Nespresso Vertuo

One of my favourite features is the ‘Reverso’, a long black, with a dash of milk – which is my exact order at my local café every morning, so I’m loving that I can now make my favourite coffee at home. The Vertuo creates the ‘Reverso’ by adding a dash of milk to the mug before extracting the coffee over the top. This process delivers a smooth, indulgent and creamy texture without the need for an additional milk frothing device.

Another new and truly exciting feature is Vertuo’s extraction process called ‘Centrifusion’. The intelligent extraction system provides an extremely high level of precision as the machine recognises, through barcode technology, each expertly designed Nespresso coffee capsule and adjusts the extraction parameters to brew each blend in the most optimal way – it reads cup size, temperature, rotational speed, flow rate and the time that water is in contact with the ground coffee.

Nespresso Vertuo

An extra fact about Nespresso that I love is that they are committed to ensuring sustainability throughout their operations – and their recycling program shows just how committed they are. With over 19,000 collection points, including Nespresso boutiques and over 300 florists, you can feel content knowing that your used capsules are recycled.

Additionally, Nespresso has partnered with Australia Post to provide co-branded satchels to ensure that even if you live remotely, you can recycle your capsules. It’s this type of thinking and ingenuity that makes me love my Nespresso Vertuo even more.

Disclosure - I was given the Nespresso machine to trial, I wasn't paid to write a review.

Styling accessories available from Click On Furniture

Beeline Design has unveiled its latest furniture range, The Cuba Collection and we are in love with the timber and leather combinations. It marries mid-century styling with a modern edge; designed around the concept of straight lines with soft edges.

Cuba is the 2nd range for Furniture maker Adam Brislin and his partner Lucy and it signals a move into an exciting new direction for the pair. Like their previous collection each piece is lovingly hand-crafted from sustainably sourced Tasmanian Oak, this time with the inclusion of natural leather. "We wanted to design a range of simple understated shapes that each featured a unique aspect that was a little unexpected" says Lucy. "Be it the magazine holder in the coffee table or the leather strapping that acts as a hinge on the ladder rack we wanted to challenge ourselves in how creatively we could use the 2 materials."

The Cuba Collection once again showcases Adam's quality craftsmanship and high level of detailing. Made in their Preston, Melbourne workshop they have followed their formula of reinterpreting trends and the resulting collection presents a fresh approach to incorporating leather which is designed to stand the test of time.

Beeline have offered Dot + Pop readers 15% OFF their collection - YAY!
