Stunning contemporary living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches...

A 1940s beach house on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been transformed into a three bedroom, two-bathroom, contemporary family home. The Avalon property belongs to the creator of bellaMUMMA, Nikki Yazxhi and her husband Adam, Creative Director at MAXCO.

After nearly 15 years in the family home, Nikki and Adam decided they would either need to sell in favour of something larger or renovate the existing house. “With our two boys aged 11 and 14, we were at a crossroads of whether to sell and buy something bigger, or stay in a house and area we love and renovate to make the house suit our family’s lifestyle." says Nikki.

Stegbar - BellaMUMMA 3.jpg

Friend and interior designer, Nina Maya was engaged to direct and style the home renovation. Following two previous renovations, this final makeover involved the family moving out for three months so that the house could be gutted and rebuilt. To achieve the simple and elegant interior, a refined palette of neutrals was chosen, using only natural materials such as European oak flooring, marble, stone and brass.

Nina designed a space that maintains the home’s original charm, while maximising the indoor areas with added storage. The original wall separating the living area and the kitchen was removed, and to increase the connection to the outside, full-height glass bi-fold doors were installed on the back deck and skylights were used to boost the amount of natural light, provided by Stegbar. The kitchen is one of the first rooms the family had outgrown. With Adam’s love of cooking and the couple’s passion for entertaining, the kitchen was maximised and upgraded with new appliances for a modern and contemporary space that performed as amazingly as it looked. The kitchen and the benchtop bar are now the hub of the house.

The new kitchen appliances were selected for their aesthetic and functionality. “We loved the look of ASKO products first off, then we started doing some research and watching Adam Liaw's YouTube videos and realised how amazing the appliances were,” says Nikki. “The ASKO Elements range is sleek and sexy, and we are beyond impressed by how they make life so much easier in the kitchen. I think the first couple of months we were continually impressed with all the new features that we were discovering.”

For the family, storage was the biggest issue. They needed to maximise the existing space and create extra storage in order to make the home more suitable for their growing family. Ultimately deciding to stay and renovate, Nikki and Adam put their savings towards creating their dream home featuring the highest quality building products. “When it came to choosing plasterboard to re-do our walls, we couldn’t go past CSR Gyprock’s Sensitive plasterboard,” says Nikki.

Elsternwick House by Fiona Lynch Interior Design

The grandest of entrances leads you into a breathtakingly beautiful transformation of a Victorian Home, Elsternwick House is absolutely stunning.

"As the client was encouraging of our exploration of colour, we took an evolutionary approach from room to room. Soft, earthy clay in the lounge melds into rusty brown in the adjacent study; through to a dining room swathed in striking blue." says Fiona Lynch.

A designer furniture collection from interior stylist Sarah Ellison...

New Wave

For a long time I have been a fan of uber stylist Sarah Ellison, mostly for her work in Real Living Mag, where she worked as a senior stylist and the style director for over 7 years and also for her down right spot on eye for styling amazing spaces. During her time as stylist she has been on the forefront of interior trends, curating them as well as making them.

Therefore we feel that her latest venture is the perfect fit, a furniture collection all of her own – entitled New Wave. It features furniture and accessories that are inspired by her local Bondi Beach, from key furniture pieces for your lounge room and kitchen, to 70's inspired mirrors and ceramic sculptural pieces. The range is truly impressive, has a distinctly relaxed modern feel and aesthetically is right up my alley!

The collection consists of an array of materials, such as linen, my personal fav terrazzo, marble, brass, leather and travertine. All of these elements work harmoniously together to bring this collection to life, and wow is it divine!

The New Wave collection by Sarah Ellison is available from Sarah’s website, and exclusively through Clickon Furniture nationwide.

We love this collaboration between Beeline Design x Design School

We love everything that Beeline Design do and their recent collaboration with the students from Design School is just so stunning. The collaboration marks the release of their newest piece the “Flow Table”.

The introduction of the Flow Table to the Beeline Design catalogue signals a new direction for the brand who until now is best known for their Calypso Stools and more recently Cuba Bed.

"We wanted to really capture the versatility and functionality of this table, to demonstrate it's many 'personalities'" says Lucy Grant who is one half of the duo behind Beeline Design.

"I really loved the work I was seeing come out of Design School and so when we were looking at how to communicate our vision they were our first choice." Continues Lucy.

Against the backdrop of the stunning Establishment Studios the Design School students created an incredible array of looks varying from modern minimalism to faded decadence. The image series also includes some existing pieces from Beeline's Cuba Collection which has been re-interpreted by the students; giving the range a more sophisticated edge whilst still retaining their relaxed modern aesthetic.

“I wanted to keep the brief really open and see how they chose to interpret our products and we are just blown away with the creativity and variety in the results.” says Lucy.

Whilst working predominantly in solid timber; with each new range Beeline use a secondary material as the hero of each piece. Following on from the leather in their Cuba Collection, the Flow Table utilises the strength and functionality of powder coated steel paired with Tasmanian Oak in its form.

"We wanted to design a table that made a statement but had a classic feel" says Adam Brislin the other half of Beeline Design.

Looking forward the brand is working on expanding their Flow range with new designs slated for release early next year.

A huge thanks to the following students from Design School: Anna Chisholm, Justine Murphy, Bea Lambos, Elena Seton, Rebecca Leijer, Holly Miskimmin, Susan Ruzeu, Sidonia Thomas, Danielle Mozjerin.

Embellish by Zuster Furniture...

Australian furniture design house Zuster have released their latest range Embellish - an all new furniture collection that captures the essence of luxury hotel living.

As Zuster’s first dedicated hospitality furniture range, Embellish brings the signature Zuster experience to luxury lifestyle, leisure and corporate environments. Taking its cues from the fashion runways, the collection draws on couture-like details to create bespoke furniture pieces for high end hotels, premium corporate and executive suites, and formal living quarters.

From precious metallic studding to hand-hewn glass and stone details, supple leathers and plush velvets, each item within the collection has been conceived as its own piece of art.

"Embellish conjures that luxe hotel feel, moving away from a purely minimalist design language to embrace the elegant refinement and fine detailing of an embellished life,” said Zuster Designer/Director Wilhelmina McCarroll.

Ms McCarroll said she looked to high fashion to find that perfect balance between pared back elegance and exquisite adornment. “Here I’ve tempered dark, moody simplicity with lightly embellished touches of gold, textured quilting, and smooth-flowing organic lines.”

Designed and hand-crafted by Zuster’s expert cabinet makers, each piece within the Embellish Collection can be tailored to suit both space requirements and design vision. “Whether you require a specific piece or you’re looking for a holistic concept, our team of craftspeople will work directly with you to design and produce each and every piece so it is “Made For You”, within a short, eight week lead time,” said Ms Sibbel.

Ms Sibbel said customisable options ranged from sizing to fit specific spatial requirements, to American Oak timber finishes. Customers can also hand pick their choice of embellishments with carved stone and hand-blown glass handles in varying finishes, and studding in metallics and matte tones.

With Embellish, we’re excited to bring Zuster’s signature craftsmanship to luxury hotel spaces, formal living quarters and high end corporate environments. With the launch of this collection we’re taking the Zuster experience beyond the living space and into the realm of executive business and luxury travel,” said Zuster Managing Director, Fleur Sibbel.

Hunting for George transform converted warehouse apartment for the launch of their newest collection 'Welcome Home'...

Shot on location in a converted Gas Regulating House in North Melbourne, Hunting for George's latest collection 'Welcome Home' is every bit as stunning as the apartment itself!

New textiles from Hunting for George feature new materials including linen, chambray, quilting, wool and leather together with their signature pure cotton. There are many stand out pieces in the collection so it’s hard to pick favourites, but some of my picks are the Polar Quilt Cover Set with diagonal quilting. The Sunday Wool Blanket made from 100% wool and the luxurious Leo Navy Leather Cushion, a dreamy deep blue leather cushion with detailed piping.

The newbies in linen include Quilt Cover Sets, Standard and Euro Pillowcases and Tableware in classic White and Charcoal. And their newest must haves are the Leather cushion accessories which are available in Tan and Navy.

The Oliver Coffee Table makes its debut as the latest addition in the Hunting for George Oliver furniture range, all Australian made and available in soft white and matte black.

Complementing the all new linen tableware, sees the launch of Hunting for George Ceramics, handmade in Melbourne and available in 3 different products: Planter, Tumbler and Espresso Cup Set.

“We fell in love with this apartment. It’s height, grandeur and age were so welcoming. The open floor plan allowed us the freedom to transform the entire home and tell a comprehensive story. We have a extensive range of products for all areas of the home and we really wanted to showcase this.” Lucy Glade-Wright, Brand Director

My top tips for choosing a rug for your home...

Brought to you by Nuffnang and Carpet Call.

When buying a rug there's a lot more to choose than just colour! You need to think about size, pile depth, placement, shape and style – and that’s where Carpet Call comes in! They have a great range of super affordable, high quality designer rugs that will instantly brighten any room and bring it to life.

I was lucky enough to choose three of their modern rugs to style in my own home, to not only show you how great they look but to help guide you on the best size and placement for your own home.

For my dining room I chose the Layton Outdoor Rug as it’s easy to clean, it matches my decor and has the perfect pile and texture for a ‘food area’.

For my dining room I chose the Layton Outdoor Rug as it’s easy to clean, it matches my decor and has the perfect pile and texture for a ‘food area’.

For your dining room or kitchen, it’s important to choose a shallow pile rug as it will be much easier to keep clean in an area where food and high traffic are involved. When choosing a rug for under your dining table it is really there to ‘zone’ the space, so ensure your table and chairs all fit on the rug. Measure first, move furniture around to check and then decide on what will suit your space.

For my bedroom I chose the Jordan Modern Rug as I love the pattern and colours but it’s also sooooo soft and fluffy!

For my bedroom I chose the Jordan Modern Rug as I love the pattern and colours but it’s also sooooo soft and fluffy!

For your bedroom choose a smaller rug and place it under the foot of your bed, coming approximately half way up. As an alternative option you could place a smaller rug to the side of the bed, where your feet land when you get out. For the bedroom think cosy, thick deep pile that feels luxurious under foot.

For my lounge I wanted neutral and earthy tones with lots of texture, so I went for Links Modern.

For my lounge I wanted neutral and earthy tones with lots of texture, so I went for Links Modern.

In your lounge room, generally a large sized rug is a great choice for the centrepiece of your room. Ensure the rug you choose compliments your furniture, interior décor and fits with your current furniture layout. Rugs are the perfect item to add another element of texture and softness to your space.

My Top Tips for choosing a rug for your lounge:

-          In a small space place the rug in front of the sofa.

-          In a large open space, I like the sofa to sit on the rug or even just the two front legs if your rug isn’t large enough for it to fit completely.

-          If you have occasional chairs, put their front legs on the rug.

-          For a modular sofa the bigger the rug the better.

-          If you have two sofas position the rug in the centre between them.

You don’t need to be super matchy matchy when choosing a rug for your home, however it does need to compliment the space.  Ensure it stands out from your original floor colour and then you can be as tame or as bold as you feel! Texture is key for bringing the most out of your room, so find something that adds a depth, you might like woven, woollen or shag, choose something you love!

Carpet Call has rugs in all shapes and sizes and some of them are HUGE which we love! They have free delivery and they also let you take up to three rugs home for 24hours to confirm that you love love love it, how good is that?!

Go and visit one of Carpet Calls many stores across Australia and let one of their friendly expert store member help you with all your flooring needs.

Barnaby Lane...

Imagery styled by Jacqui Moore and photography by Eve Wilson.

In my opinion timber and leather is one of the best interior combinations and Barnaby Lane does it like no other!

Barnaby Lane began with the idea to make high quality design accessible to everyone, furniture that is simple yet a focal point and doesn’t cost a fortune or send you broke. They believe that less is more (I am on that band wagon) and their design principles centre around sleek and minimalist ideas.

Barnaby Lane work with a team of talented individuals across the globe, who all share the same vision and passion and they believe that hand crafted is best. Sustainability is also very important to Barnaby Lane therefore they only use certified recycled wood in their products.

On my wish list is the Smith Chair - classic but contemporary and will seamlessly fit into your current interior but so timeless in it's aesthetics that you will love it forever!
